Pitkin Education Center Temporally Closed Due to Hazardous Fumes.

by Erin McAnany

A localized chemical reaction from a drain cleaning at Bergen Pizza caused the Pitkin Education Center to close on Tuesday evening as a precaution.

According to an email from BCC president Dr. Eric M. Friedman, “A contractor conducted a routine cleaning of a drain in Bergen Pizza. The cleaner reacted with trapped food/grease and created a localized chemical reaction.

“Four College employees in close proximity inhaled the chemical reaction and are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital. Please join me in keeping them in our thoughts this evening.”

All classes and activities in the Pitkin Education Center are cancelled for Tuesday evening, November 23. Pitkin Education Center will reopen Wednesday morning, November 24, for normal work operations. Friedman said the building has been declared safe by first responders.
