Letters from the editors
"Dear Reader,
It is my absolute pleasure to welcome you all to the revival of The Torch as we begin the Fall 2023 semester. With our revival, we hope to bring about many changes, engagement and the chance to have all voices of BCC be heard.
My name is Charles Fagan and I will be the Editor-in-Chief. I am honored to have the chance to add some new flare to The Torch (pun intended.) I’ve been attending Bergen Community College since 2020, and I’ve been writing even longer than that. Having chosen Journalism as my major, It was a rewarding experience to join The Torch team in the Spring 2023 semester, so to have the chance to lead our new team into a revival is an exciting conquest.
The Torch is a student-led publication run for, and by, students on campus. While we are changing some of our appearance around, our core values remain the same as always. To be illuminated by the students of BCC. We are inspired by the voices of the students, more specifically, of the multitude of voices that are contained within our campus. Have an opinion? hot take? Interesting idea pitch? The Torch is for you! Whatever it may be, we hope you find your creative (or serious) light with us.
The Torch’s mission with our esteemed team is to emphasize the ‘community’ in Bergen Community College by bringing thoughtful and engaging commentaries on political and social issues, while also displaying the campus’s creative side through the arts, literacy, and more. Anyone is welcome to submit their work for publication on our website.
As a publication, we do not want to support any specific ideology, but we have set standards regarding the posting of harmful pieces as it relates to minority groups. We see our platform as a safe space of student voices and view that it is our responsibility to highlight the diversity on campus. That said, we would like to be as transparent as possible. For this reason, we gladly welcome any comments and critiques you may have as a reader. I am excited to further The Torch’s voice and to hear your stories."

"I’m Rachael Castro, the social media editor of the Torch. I’m very excited to be a part of
the BCC College Newspaper. I joined back in July, not aware of the amount of
opportunities the newspaper would bring about. Not only have I gotten to meet many
interesting and skillful individuals- photographers, editors, writers, videographers, etc.-
I also have had the chance to connect with other clubs and faculty at BCC. In the
beginning of this year, it felt like we started from square one with a transformed vision
of the Torch, and it’s amazing to observe the students who joined that have actively
contributed to this vision this semester.
One of our main goals for the Torch is to first and foremost, ensure that more students recognize our presence while simultaneously strengthening the BCC community. The social media has been an extraordinarily useful tool to spread awareness about our coverage on campus events including sports games, club affairs, forums, and more. I feel that it has also given a place for implementing students’ voices on their opinions about what’s taking place at BCC and how they’ve been a part of the community. Our articles have equally done the job of giving students access to obtaining information about significant events and topics that they might be interested in and as a result, start discussing with their peers. That being said, we intend for the newspaper to encompass freedom of conversation regarding arts and entertainment, politics, education, sports, international news whether that be in or out of campus.
While continuing to figure out our own rhythm and structure within the Torch, we plan on building on our efforts and witnessing what comes of it in these next semesters! We hope to do this by exercising the passions and hard work of our team to produce the best output for our viewers and readers. In the meantime, we hope our newly designed website and logo will be enough to stir up some excitement for our continual progression this year!"
