by:Franzen Quicho As the spring semester continues, students start to seek assistance for their courses. The Cerullo Learning Assistance Center (CLAC) at BCC offers free tutoring for over 200 courses, ranging from math and sciences to music courses. Tutoring is available on the Paramus campus from Monday through Saturday, and also at the Meadowlands campus from Monday through Thursday.
The CLAC offers tutoring sessions both in-person and online. Walk-in appointments for math and sciences at L-131 are also available for students who did not schedule an appointment. Scheduled tutoring sessions last for no more than 50 minutes, while math and science walk-ins typically last 20 minutes per session. No additional work is given to students after each tutoring session as it is self-selective on the student’s part. CLAC also offers music walk-in services located at West Hall. Students interested in music walk-ins must contact CLAC in advance because it operates at specific hours only.
Tutoring services are only available to the courses that students are registered in during the semester. Students can book up to two tutoring sessions weekly to which they can choose whether they prefer to have it one-on-one. Appointments can be scheduled up to two weeks in advance either in-person at the L-125 front desk or via CLAC’s contact number, email, or at tutortrac.bergen.edu.
Besides tutoring, CLAC also offers other services and opportunities for students. Kelli Hayes, CLAC’s academic coaching supervisor, mentions that academic coaching for current students and ACCUPLACER review sessions for incoming students are also available. Hayes also states that the CLAC provides on-campus tutoring employment for interested students throughout the semester. “If a student has a 3.0 GPA and maintains a B+ or higher in a course they want to tutor, we are always accepting applicants,” she says.
