“How do I balance school, work and my 3 year old daughter? “
Hi, Bergen Parent!
I would like to steer you toward a different mindset. You aim to find balance, but that often leads to pursuing perfection. Think about it: whether it’s trying to balance a scale or a large stack of books on your head, both require exact measurements or precise movements. What happens if you’re slightly off balance? The entire goal fails.
Fortunately, life is not black and white, so why are we holding ourselves to this unnecessary (and impossible) standard?
Instead, let’s ask ourselves how we can put sincere effort into each of our roles. The simplest solution is to be present. Try adopting these habits:
- When you are in class, aim to either ask one question or volunteer an answer.
- When you are at work, focus on your attitude. Name one thing you are grateful for and one thing you love about yourself.
- When you are home, spend five minutes reading a book to your daughter.
Honest actions are always fulfilling, no matter their size. This will prevent you from being overly critical of yourself.
Additionally, grant yourself grace. You are in one of the most difficult seasons of life. Remind yourself that in just a few short years, your daughter will be a little older—a little more independent—and you will graduate from Bergen. Life will get easier.
In the meantime, make sincerity your best friend. As long as you try your best, you are doing enough.
