Leadership and Collaboration Workshop

by: Monserrat Nava-Ramirez

During the third week of February 2022, Professor Iris Bucchino, part of the English Basic Skills faculty, presented the correlation between leadership and collaboration. Bucchino also mentioned essential tips to become a leader and relate them to different situations. For instance, community, religion, corporate, political, and campaigning groups.

A leader can transform themselves and others and go out of their way to boost the self-esteem of their personnel. “Leaders help themselves and others to do the right thing,” Bucchino said.

An effective leader’s qualities are taking risks, having integrity, background knowledge, desire, motivation to lead, confidence, teamwork, setting direction, building an inspiring vision, and being creative. “If people believe in themselves, it’s amazing what they can accomplish,” Bucchino said.

The principles of collaboration are:

  • Join and create communities
  • Learn and grow with others
  • Listen and respect
  • Connect and engage with people

Collaboration is two or more people working on a specific goal. Also, it has many benefits such as relationships, increased communication, teaching flexibility, enhancing productivity, engaging citizens, encouraging persistence and resilience.

Before Bucchino finished her workshop, she asked the audience, “Now, after this information, what is to be a leader for you?” “Being a leader is taking the initiative to start something new and work together as a team respecting others’ opinion.” An audience member said

“If you want to be a leader, you have to be the example and be open to collaborating,” Professor Bucchino said at the end of her Leadership and Collaboration Workshop.
